Air Transport and the demand for it is ever increasing. The growth in tourism and economic activities in Zambia, the sub-region, and indeed the whole world, makes air transport the safest and most reliable mode of transportation. This increase in aviation activities calls for professionalism in ensuring the safe operation of air traffic. The aviation industry therefore, needs competent Air Traffic Controllers trained in accordance with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Department of Civil Aviation (DCA)

The Curriculum and Advisory Committee endeavoured to include all modules whick make a controller efficient and effective. Knowledge of modules in Meteorology, Radio Navigation Aids, Air Traffic Management asserts the controller in his/her day-to-day execution of duties.

An Air Traffic COntroller is a manager from graduation time and therefore, other modules such as Aviation Law, Aviation Geography and Priciples of Flight are also included.

The programme aims at providing the Aviation industry in Zambia and abroad with well trained and professional Air Traffic Controllers. The Air Traffic Control and Management course should enable controllers to perform a wide range of duties in various units. These duties include the follwing:

  • Aerodrome Control
  • Approach Control
  • Area Control
  • RADAR control

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Full Grade Twelve (12) Certificate with Credits in Five (5) subjects, which include Physics/Physical Science, Geography, Mathematics, and English language. Candidates need to be proven medically fit by qualified medical personnel.

MODE OF CERTIFICATION

A Certificate in in Air Traffic Management will be awarded by the Zambia Air Services Training Institute after successful completion of the Area Control Procedural course.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Students are assessed in Practicals - 60%, Continuous Assessment - 20%, Final Examinations - 60%. The total assessment marks being 100%.

TEACHING STARTEGIES

The Air Traffic Control and Management course employees a number of teaching techniques and strategies, namely -Lectures, Videos and Area Control Procedural Simulation.

DURATION

The duration of the course is Six (6) months from commencement date.
