With the critical shortage of qualified computer personnel in Zambia, there is need to produce computer graduates locally. Since computing in Zambia is mainly business oriented, such graduates should have basic understanding of business principles and practices and acquire particular skills in computing.

Graduates holding a Certificate in Computer Systems Engineering studies should posses the knowledge necessary to enable them analyze a business related problem, specifying a computer based solution, design and implement a software system and maintain it using any range of the most commonly used languages in Zambia.

The principle aims and objectives of the Computer Systems Engineering certification, obtained from Zambia Air Services Training Institute are therefore seen follows as:

  • The teaching of the fundamental principles in computing with particular emphasis on Business Computing.
  • The teaching of necessary skills, tools and techniques to enable graduates to embark on careers in the computing profession.
  • Providing sufficient knowledge of business concepts to enable students communicate effectively with personnel in related disciplines.
  • The acquisition of a fundamental knowledge base by students.
  • The understanding and application of this knowledge base.
  • The teaching of students to communicate and document effectively

On completion of the Certificate in Computer Systems Engineerin gprogramme, it is expected that students will find employment in a commercial data processing department either within the traditional large scale centralized business system using mainframe systems or the small business sector wheremicro-computers predominate. Typically a graduate might find employment after sufficient experience within a company as a Computer Systems Technician or Network Administrator.

MINIMUM ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Full Grade Twelve (12) Certificate with Credits in Five (5) subjects, which include Mathematics, and English language. Candidates need to be proven medically fit by qualified medical personnel.

MODE OF CERTIFICATION

A Certificate in Computer Systems Engineering awarded by the Zambia Air Services Training Institute after successful completion of the course.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Students are assessed in Practicals - 60%, Continuous Assessment - 20%, Final Examinations - 60%. The total assessment marks being 100%.

DURATION

The duration of the course is Six (6) months from commencement date for Full Time Students, and Open Distance Lerarning (ODL) students.
